You Just Got into a Car Accident. Now What?

One evening, when it was raining heavily, due to poor visibility, your car collided with another vehicle. You are a dexterous driver and have decades of experience in driving. It might not be your fault.

Many accidents do happen due to various reasons and give a dreadful experience to the drivers. The car insurance is mandatory for all cars in Singapore. However, the claim amount depends on the type of cover you have taken.

All drivers should know about the ins and outs of the car accidentclaim and especially the car accident insurance claim time limit.

What to do at the accident spot?

Immediately after the accident, try to come out of the shock as soon as possible, do not panic and try to be stable.  Take the contact details, vehicle numbers of the other party involved in the accident and also share yours with them.

Take clear pictures of the accident scene and the damages of all the vehicles.

What you should not do at the accident spot?

·        You should never move the vehicle involved in the accident before taking the pictures.

·        If anyone is injured or fatalities or there, you should never attempt to move the injured person.

·        Should never have unauthorised dealings with the tow-truck services  at the accident scene.

When to report?

Always report the incident to your insurer while you are at the accident site itself so that they can assist you in a better way.

Irrespective of the coverage that you have, as per the requirements of the GIA of Singapore, within 24 hours you should report the incident to your insurer and if the accident happens on a weekend, report it by the next working day.

Even if your car is not damaged in the accident or if it’s a minor damage that doesn’t incur much cost, then also you should report the incident to your insurer. Otherwise, your NCD will be forfeited or reduced by 10%.

Whom to report if anyone is injured?

If there are injury cases in the accident, then call for medical assistance immediately and the Police within 24 hours of the incident.

Even if one person involved in the accident is taken from the accident spot by an ambulance or self-conveyed to the hospital.

Or

If anyone injured in the accident obtained outpatient medical leave for 3 or more days should make a Traffic Police report immediately or within 24 hours.

If the accident involves any fatalities, damage to Government Property/vehicle, Foreign vehicle, Pedestrian or cyclist, Hit-and-Run case, then make a Traffic Police report immediately or within 24 hours.

How to report?

Within 24 hours of the accident or the next working day (in case the accident happens on a weekend), call your insurer on his Hotline and report the incident. Also, for tow-truck services and further advice regarding the accident.

Why to report?

You should meet this requirement of reporting to your insurer within 24 hours so that he will take up your case, should the other party involved in the accident files against you.

What happens if I do not report?

If you fail to report the accident,

•        Your insurer may repudiate liability which means later on, if the other party makes a claim against you, then you have to pay for the legal bills and other costs on your own.

•        Your NCD/ No Claims Discount will be docked upon the renewal of your policy.

•        Your insurer may cancel or refuse to renew your policy.
